It helps the world’s smallest penguins travel safely from their nests to sea.
It’s not everyday you hear about an underpass built just for penguins—but the tiny blue penguins of Oamaru, New Zealand are loved very much by their townspeople. To protect the blue-feathered friends that populate the land, a tunnel was recently built at Oamaru Harbor, Otago, on the east coast of the South Island. In the early 90s, the“fairy penguins” began nesting in an abandoned rock quarry at the edge of the harbor. Now, 75,000 people visit the colony every year to take in the sites of the 2-pound birds.
