A Look Back At The Big Mac Through The Years

1967. The year that brought us the summer of love, The Graduate and regrettable bell-bottom pants. We saw the birth of American classics like the Chevy Camaro, Julia Roberts and of course, the McDonald’s Big Mac. Amid the chaos of the sixties, nothing brought us together quite like “…two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun…” America has seen a lot over the past 50 years, and so has the Big Mac. Here’s a look back at the biggest moments of the last five decades that made us say there’s a #BigMacForThat.

1969 : The First Man On The Moon

In the summer of ’69, Americans gathered around their televisions to watch as Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. You could say it was “One small fry for man, one Big Mac for mankind.”

1972: The Watergate Scandal

Richard Nixon’s presidency was defined, and ultimately cut short, by his involvement in the Watergate scandal. During the 250 hours of testimony reviewed at the hearings, Nixon surely got hungry for a juicy burger.

1989: The Fall Of The Berlin Wall

The fall of the Berlin wall marked the beginning of the end of the Cold War. As divisions between East and West dissolved, the Big Mac, blue jeans, and rock and roll became symbols of newfound freedom.

1991: The Dawn Of The Internet Age

Americans went online in the early 90s as the world wide web became publicly available. Our computers shouted “You’ve got mail!” as our tummies shouted “McDonald’s, please!”

2009: The First African-American President

On January 20, 2009, Barack Obama was sworn in as the first African-American president of the United States. As witnesses to this historic event, supporters in the crowd chanted “Yes we can!” and “I’m lovin’ it!”

2017: The Big Mac’s Big Moment

2017 celebrates the McDonald’s Big Mac. While fashion, politics and pop culture have all changed over the last half century, nothing has been more dependable (or more delicious) than America’s favorite burger. In celebration of the good times we’ve shared, McDonald’s is introducing two new burgers to the Big Mac family for a limited time — the single patty Mac Jr. for lighter appetites and the beefed up Grand Mac for those who can handle a challenge.
