Sebastien Lifshitz, a photographer from Paris, has spent the past 30 years obsessing over vintage photgraphs and collecting endless amounts of photo albums from flea markets and thrift stores around the world.
During one of his searches, he came upon a photo album that belonged to a gay couple in the 1950s. This discovery intrigued Lifshitz and led to him filing a documentary entitled Les Invisibles (2012). Below you'll see photographs of couples who, at the time, didn't have the luxury of being who they are outside of close friends and family, yet were still brave enough to document their lives together.
“It was quite unusual to have intimate photographs of gay people because most of the time they had to be very discreet,†said Sebastien.
Many decades ago, same-sex partnerships were viewed as taboo and oftentimes morally wrong. Yet, these couples risked so much by having their memories captured on film and developed.
These photos show the bravery and courage each individual had.
They show the fearless life they lived.
One without inhibitions...
One without conforming to gender norms...
And more importantly, one where the only thing that mattered was that they lived a life of love, happiness and acceptance day in and day out.
