This 'OITNB' Star Just Clapped Back At ‘Sizeism’ In Hollywood In The Best Way
"Even though I'm a size 8 or 10, I still can look as great as someone who's a size 0."
When stars like Kim Kardashian go around bragging about their tiny waist size, it further ignites the (frankly gross) Hollywood standard that in order to be a fashion icon, you have to be a small size. But Dascha Polanco, aka Daya from "Orange Is the New Black," aka your new favorite badass female, is here to break that stigma and show us that really, all sizes can be beautiful.
Anyone who follows the 33-year-old actress on Instagram knows that Dascha is obsessed with fashion, which she recently opened up about in Vogue. "Fashion in my real life is more important to me than fashion in my acting life; it's expressive, it's creative, there's so much to do with it," Dascha told the mag. However, she's sick of being told that you have to be a size 0 to wear certain clothes or trends.
The actress shed light on the harsh reality she's faced in the fashion industry, which is that some designers and labels refuse to dress her because of her size.
"I had a situation with a high-end brand the other day where I had personally invested so much money purchasing their items, and I love what they do, so I had my publicist reach out to their PR team," she said. "'Their response was, 'Oh, you're not the sizes we have, not right now, maybe in the future.'"
Soooo, cool—they're refusing to dress an actress on an Emmy-nominated TV show with almost two million social media followers. While mainstream fashion has been catering to plus-sizes, it's the luxury labels that appear to be snubbing women who are larger sizes. "My industry friends, who are clear and honest with me say, 'Girl, they don t have your size, and you're not at that level yet, so you have to either move that way or just build those relationships so that later in the future maybe it happens."
However, Dascha isn't exactly planning on giving them that privilege. "Now even if they want me to [wear their designs] down the road, I will not give them the pleasure," she said. "It's disappointing, but I try to work with up-and-coming designers who will make things for me and who will collaborate with me. People who love my curves and embrace them as much as I do."
Dascha isn't the only celebrity to speak out about fashion designers refusing to carry larger sizes. "Ghostbusters" star Leslie Jones recently took to Twitter to talk about the lack of dresses available for the premiere of her film, which ya know, of course she needed a great dress for. Leslie's comments went viral and designer Christian Siriano ended up stepping in, offering to "make her something fabulous to wear."
It's moments like these we need to recognize so we can extinguish sizeism once and for all. It's great that stars like Leslie and Dascha are so open to breaking barriers.
"I want to break that barrier," Dascha says. "Even though I'm a size 8 or 10, I still can look as great as someone who s a size 0." Yasss, girl.
