Fairy Penguins Do Exist, And They’re Being Bred At The Bronx Zoo
The Bronx Zoo in New York just made history.
In its 120-year history, this is the first time the Bronx Zoo has bred and hatched a "Little Penguin."
This species of penguin is also known as blue penguins or fairy penguins.
Check out the critters in action:
The rest of the bunch in the video was hatched at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia. They were then moved to the Bronx Zoo in New York as part of a breeding program.
This chick weighed only 44.5 grams.
Fairy penguins are the smallest of the penguin species. The adults can grow to an average of 30-33 centimeters (12-13 inches) tall and usually weigh only 1.5 kilograms (2-3 pounds).
The zoo now has this pint-sized animal on display.
The Bronx Zoo, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society, is supporting the Little Penguin Conservation Program in Taronga Zoo.
The zoo stated, "Approximately 15 penguins a year hatch at Taronga, making it the most successful little penguin breeding program in the world."
We're looking forward to seeing many more of these adorable animals!
