The Dose Guide To Heat Wave Binge-Watching
Mind over matter, friendo.
It's a scorcher out there. You've burned yourself on doorknobs and your butt is sticking to every seat. Before you go busting open fire hydrants and sitting inside gas station freezers, remember that your mind is a powerful tool. Trick your brain into thinking it's not 1000° outside by bingeing on these classic cold weather movies. Get ready to blast the AC, think freezing thoughts, and pretend your dandruff is snow. You'll be chill as hell in no time.
1. Snow Day (2000)
Call in sick, put an ice cube in your bra and join the pack of kids enjoying a snow day in this Nickelodeon-produced flick from 2000. Tbh, this movie is not great. But it does feature Chevy Chase as the dad and Chris Elliott as the villainous snowplow driver, so you could do much worse.
2. Fargo (1996)
Brutal Minnesota winters have never looked more appealing. Live vicariously through these cops and criminals as they traipse around in snow making trouble and solving mysteries.
3. Nanook Of The North (1922)
Commonly known as the first feature-length documentary, this film about the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic has since proven to be largely staged. Regardless of whether or not the story is true, all that snow is 100% legit. Make like Nanook and pretend you're in an igloo.
4. Happy Feet (2006)
Dang, nothing like a bunch of dancing penguins to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. But if you close your eyes, you too can feel like you're diving into the clear Antarctic sea.
5. The Shining (1980)
'The Shining' is straight up *bone chilling.* Between Jack Nicholson's face and that elevator full of blood, you might be up all night. But it's not like you were going to get much sleep in your sweat-soaked sheets anyway.
6. Snow Dogs (2002)
What could possibly be better than Cuba Gooding, Jr. getting pulled around by a bunch of puppies in the snow? Cool off with this dream come true or just watch the '30 Rock' episode about the ripoff '5now Dog5.'
7. Doctor Zhivago (1965)
Set in the frozen tundra that is Russia, this epic tale of love and revolution has it all: long-lost loves, ice palaces, and days long journeys through knee-high snow. Oh, and fur hats. Lots of fur hats.
8. The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
New York City overtaken by a snowpocalypse? Yes please! Right about now I can think of nothing better. Ponder global warming and the impending ice age with this "climate science fiction disaster."
9. The Mighty Ducks (1992)
Break out the VHS player and hit the ice with your favorite pubescent hockey team! This movie rules all year round, but it's frozen shenanigans are especially appreciated when the temperature spikes.
10. Cool Runnings (1993)
Man, winter sports movies were really having a moment in the early 90s. Nothing says "cool" like a bunch of Jamaican bobsledders making their Olympic dreams come true.
11. Frozen (2013)
I almost didn't want to include this movie, but it seemed like a must. Chances are, if you've sired or babysat any children in the last 3 years, you already have a copy of this frosty fairy tale lying around. But if the question "do you want to build a snow man?" makes you want to set shit on fire, try "Ice Age" instead.
