"I feel like I'm in a personal hell."
On Monday, following the mega successful opening weekend of the new 'Ghostbusters' reboot, star Leslie Jones should have been celebrating. Instead, she was busy fielding a barrage of racist attacks on twitter.
After receiving scores of hateful comments, Jones expressed her hurt and disappointment.
Instead of bowing to the popular Internet logic of "don't feed the trolls," Jones has been exposing and reporting the abusers.
The 'Ghostbusters' star has also used her public visibility to call out Twitter for not doing enough to combat hate speech.
Twitter's initial response of "we don't comment on individual accounts" garnered much criticism.
Finally, Twitter began to remove the reported tweets and released the following statement to Buzzfeed News:
At the end of such a painful day, Leslie Jones announced that she would be taking a break from Twitter.
Whether or not she decides to return in the future, Jones' fans and colleagues will surely have her back. #LoveForLeslieJ
