One day, Rose-Lynn Fisher was plagued with curiosity about tears. She found herself wondering if tears of grief differed from tears of joy, in appearance. She begin her exploration by placing them under a microscope and what she discovered was incredible.
She then went on to study over 100 diferent tears and discovered that basal tears (those which lubricate our eyes) are completely different from tears that occur when laughing. As her research progressed, she continued to find that tears differed in appearance depending on the emotion experienced. You can see more of Rose-Lynn's project, "The Topography of Tears" here.
