Give All Your Trinkets An Adorable Home With These Easy DIY Dishes
They're so much cuter than a junk drawer.
There's just something about tiny dishes that are simply irresistible. I find myself drawn to them in every store because no matter how many I own, I can always find more trinkets to justify buying 6 of them.
But instead of blowing through part of your paycheck, why not try making your own? They're also the perfect gift because, as previously discussed, no one can ever have too many adorable dishes— especially when they're handmade by a friend.
You'll want to use clay* to make your dish, and paint to decorate it--so gather the colors you're feeling and get to work.
*We recommend Model Magic because even after it dries it stays super light, but plenty sturdy
You'll also need a rolling pin (though a bottle of wine will work in a pinch), a small disposable bowl (to help the clay keep its shape) and a cookie cutter.
Start with a piece of clay the size of at tennis ball. Flatten it out on a piece of wax paper with your rolling pin and cut out your shape.
While a traditional circle cookie cutter works just fine, try experimenting with some other funky shapes, too. If you really want to jazz it up, twist multiple clay colors together before rolling out the dough for a marbled effect.
Next, gently press the clay into the bowl.
This will help form a lip to keep all your trinkets in check.
While you wait for your dishes to dry*, start brainstorming all the designs you want to paint on them.
* 24 hours in the dish and 24-48 hours flipped upside down after that
Paint your dishes with acrylic paints and once they're dry, spray a coat of clear sealant to make them shine.
You could also paint on a coat or two of Modge Podge for the same effect.
Gather up all your trinkets and give them an adorable home!
