Portal 2: The Musical Is Happening, But the Team Behind It Needs Your Help
The cake may be a lie, but the show is very, very real.
Portal 2 fans, have you been moping around your house, wishing that a bunch of Canadians would adapt the sequel to your favorite puzzle-platformer into socially progressive, staged, song and dance spectacular?
Oh, you haven't? You'd rather see "Hamilton?"
Well, phooey to you! That hasn't stopped the Geekenders, a 'semi-professional' theatre troupe best known for their musical parodies of popular geek culture from doing it anyway.
Since their debut production of "Portal 2: The (Unauthorized) Musical" first caught viral fire on Reddit and Tumblr, they've tackled everything from "Star War"s to "Jurassic Park" to "Batman," but now, the Geekenders are ready to revisit Portal 2. They've got some awesome concepts, a bold, heartfelt message, a nerdy reverence for the source material, and, best of all, an Indiegogo campaign so you can help make it happen.
The show, adapted to the stage by members of the Geekenders crew, tells the story of the game through altered versions of songs from popular musicals including 'Hairspray' and 'Next to Normal.'
According to the show's indiegogo page.
"'Portal 2: The (Unauthorized) Musical' presents a first-rate adaptation of a beloved video game in an effort to discuss topics of feminism, abusive relationships, PTSD, and body positivity."
Geekenders is resurrecting the production having secured a four-show run in January of 2017. Money will go towards everything from set design to costumes, for which the concepts look pretty sweet.
The art for everyone's favorite deadpan AI, GLaDOS looks especially cool.
Donations are, of course, encouraged and can earn you a range of neat perks like a one hour piano lesson, a custom piece of art, four-course meal or a personality core of either Wheatley, Adventure, Fact, or Space.
They only have around a month left to meet their $17,000 goal, but the attention the production has already garnered will set a cool precedent for live theatre productions of video games. Who knows? Support a Portal musical in Vancouver and the next thing you know we could have an Uncharted Musical winning a Tony.
So, what are you waiting for? Go pledge some bux for science!
