This $6 Bottle Of Walmart Wine Just Got Ranked One Of The Best In The World
More expensive doesn't always mean better.
Good wine is for wealthy, snobbish types.
At least that's what we always thought. High-quality vintages can go for hundreds, even thousands of dollars. The most expensive bottle of wine ever sold went for $500,000. People love wine, and will pay handsomely for it.
But now, one business is unexpectedly turning the idea of "good wine" upside down. Asda, Walmart's grocery affiliate in the UK, is proving a high price tag and high quality aren't always synonymous.
La Moneda Reserva's Malbec is selling for just over $6.
The wine is made in Chile and "has a deep purple colour with violet tints, rounded and velvety tannins, complex plum, fig, strawberry, spices [sic] flavours and excellent length."
But more importantly, the Malbec won the Platinum - Best in Show award from Decanter Magazine's World Wine Awards this year, a magazine-sponsored award series in which 200 judges blindly taste thousands of wines from all over the world. The wine won the major award alongside numerous other high-quality, considerably more expensive wines.
And to make the victory even sweeter, the wine is available at Asda, the UK version of Walmart.
This is hilarious in its irony, but also sad—we can't buy the wine here in the United States and the wine is, perhaps unsurprisingly, currently listed as "sold out" on the Asda website. Hopefully they won't raise the price on us before we can all have a taste.
