Your Three Favorite Punk Bands From 2002 Are Back From The Grave
Dust off your studded belts, black eye liner and angsty graphic T.
Where would we be without the High School classics: Fat Lip, The Anthem or Adam's Song? They inspired the emo phase attributing to yearbook photos we're still trying to forget. They played the background music on our Myspace homepage. It's fun to joke about the very embarrassing influence these bands had on us. In fact, I'm listening to Sum 41's "The Hell Song," right now and I'm fucking moved. In fact, I might actually be excited for this revival. In any case, I'm intrigued.
Sum 41 made their official revival announcement last week.
The band's comeback album is expected to be released in the Fall, so you have a few months to stock up on black eye liner and nail polish. They'll be releasing the album with Hopeless Records. The band wrote:
"The new album will be coming out in the fall of this year. As we have more specific info, we'll be sharing it with you, FIRST!"
If this Instagram snippet is any indication, it sounds like we can expect the same angsty punk sounds we fell in love with.
But what's punk without Blink 182?
Fret not, retired posers. Blink 182 released an official version of their new song "Bored to Death" in April; a full album is expected this summer. "California will be the band's seventh album, but the first to be recorded without founding guitarist Tom DeLonge (the band issued a statement last year announcing the guitarist's departure from the group.) The album is expected to drop on July 1st, which not-so-coincidentally happens to be the 182nd day of the year. Get a taste of the band sans Angels and Airwaves vocals in their new single, "Bored to Death" here .
In addition to the new album, the band will be running a U.S. Summer tour called A Day to Remember. The tour will Kick of July 22nd in San Diego.
And it wouldn't be a real 2000s throwback if Good Charlotte weren't involved punk rock renaissance.
Good Charlotte announced their decision to reunite last year and debuted their single, Makeshift Love—but that's not all. We're also expecting their first album in six years to drop July 15th. The album, Youth Authority, also includes their latest single "40 oz. Dream," which is a sarcastic little diddy explaining the confusion of being a punk rocker in 2016.
Lead guitarist, Benji Madden told Rolling Stone:
"For us, '40 oz. Dream' was the perfect song to kick off our new album. It's got all the sarcasm and humor we've always loved, and lots of affection for the past and present. As a band that formed in 1996, it's a fun moment to be welcomed back so warmly. We're very happy to have found our place in 2016."
The music video features a coloring-book inspired tour through the minds of the band. Peek at it here.
So, dig up your studded belt and skull-print sneakers. It's going to be a summer full of head banging, crowd moshing and crowd surfing. These bands have been known to inflict some serious emo-spiration, and we expect no less this time around.
