Florida Finally Did Something Great: They Invented Biodegradable Beer Holders
Changing the world, one six-pack at a time.
Americans drank 3 billion gallons of canned beer in 2015, and tragically, most of the plastic 6-pack rings end up in the ocean.
There, they terrorize an estimated 1 million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals and turtles.
And while cutting the loops does do a service to the animals that get stuck in the rings, it doesn't do anything for the animals ingesting the plastic.
So Florida's Saltwater Brewery crafted a unique solution: biodegradable 6-pack rings.
The packaging is made of wheat and barley waste (so it's also a clever repurposing of previously-unused byproducts of the brewing process) and is designed to disintegrate within two hours of entering the ocean.
And if the rings don't degrade fully before reaching marine life, they are fully edible for the animals.
The innovative solution can be extremely cost-effective with the correct participation from large breweries, and could play a huge role in reducing the pollutive footprint left by beer drinkers around the world.
