J. K. Rowling Is Sick Of Racists Getting Mad About Black Hermione Casting
"Hermione can be a black woman with my absolute blessing and enthusiasm."
Last year Twitter went into an outrage when award-winning black actress Noma Dumezweni was cast as Hermione in Harry Potter and the Curse Child, the two-part play that continues the Harry Potter saga.
It was nonsensical and J.K. Rowling put haters in their place with one tweet.
But ever since the first photos of Noma as Hermione were released, the online hate is coming back.
But Jo comes to the rescue once again. She told the Observer that: "I had a bunch of racists telling me that because Hermione turned white—that is, lost colour from her face after a shock—that she must be a white woman, which I have a great deal of difficulty with."
"With my experience of social media, I thought that idiots were going to idiot," she explained. "But what can you say? That's the way the world is. Noma was chosen because she was the best actress for the job."
Rowling has nothing but good things to say about the casting of Noma: "She gets Hermione inside out."
And from a much-revered creator as Rowling, such high praise should shut down the hatred in no time. Now if only Twitter would get on board.
