There's A Place For Every Type Of Nerd To Celebrate Geek Pride Day In NYC
Calling all trekkies, dorks, and dweebs.
When you're a huge nerd and things like Comic-Con, Encyclopedia Britannica, and the History Channel exist, every day is Geek Pride Day. But the rest of the slightly less dorky, less mathematically gifted part of the world celebrates the holiday on May 25.
If you're dating a dork you're in luck. You two can celebrate the holiday with more options for dates than there are sequels to Star Wars. Here are the best things to do in New York City for pretty much every type of nerd out there.
Toy Nerds
Toy Tokyo Underground is for the nerd who is really just a big kid at heart. This showroom takes you deep into the trenches of the designer toy world. Here a range of artists display their work in the form of vinyl toys, canvas, and film.
Go play, geeks.
Comic Book Nerds
Geeks need fuel, and Gotham City Lounge is the perfect environment for them to eat, drink and be nerdy.
Tons and tons of comic book memorabilia line the walls, and the dive-y vibes these digs emit are perfect for a date night shared between two dweebs.
Media Nerds
This one's for any news-obsessed nerd who gets nostalgic for old television and radio programs.
Formerly known as The Museum of Television and Radio, The Paley Center for Media was founded in 1975 and is dedicated to exploring the cross section of media and society. The Center's library hosts 150,000 programs from cartoons to historic broadcasts and consoles to watch or listen to them.
Superhero Nerds
Here's a little something for the inner superhero inside all of us nerds.
The Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. has everything you need to feel like an authentic superhero. You'll find capes, disguises, and invisibility devices among a slew of other gear to make you feel like a real superhero.
What makes it even cooler is that it actually serves as a front for a non-profit tutoring and writing center for kids called 826 NYC. Talk about heroic.
Math Nerds
There are people who pull out their iPhones to calculate a tip at a restaurant, and then there are people who dedicated an entire museum to math.
If you or your significant other at the latter, then the Museum of Math in Manhattan is the place for you. With exhibits, galleries, and programs this place is sure to be a bigger brain buster than any game of Sudoku you never completed.
Comedy Nerds
Does the nerd in your life make you stay in every Saturday so you can catch the latest episode of SNL? This is the place for you.
Saturday Night Live: The Exhibition includes 40 years of SNL history alongside a rare look into what it takes to create the show. Interactive sets, props, videos, photos, and multimedia presentations which include never before seen aspects of the show.
Star Wars Nerds
Calling all Star Wars fans (which is basically all nerds) you've got to get over to the Star Wars and the Power of Costume: The Exhibition.
This exhibit takes you beyond what you see onscreen and into the iconic wardrobe that makes Star Wars what it is. From the iconic black mask of Darth Vader to the gilded suit of C-3PO this would make any Star Wars fanatic freak.
Science Nerds
This is like Coachella for nerds. The World Science Festival where top scientists discuss big ideas. The WSF launched in 2008 and is dedicated to informing and inspiring the public about the various fields of science. Guests of previous years include Edward O. Wilson, Stephen Hawking, Oliver Sacks, Daniel Dennett, Philip Glass, and Charlie Kaufman.
This year's festival runs from June 1 - 5.
Book Nerds
This Brooklyn bookstore is quaint and intimate. Sure, there are tons of bookstores around New York, but this one is the perfect spot for bookish nerds to worm around on a hot summer day.
Unnameable Books has a top notch selection of books for the top notch nerd in your life.
So get off your computers and close your books, nerds. Today's your day.
Here's to the one day a year you won't get shoved into a locker. With so much to do and see (and yes, learn) it's time to celebrate Dungeons and Dragons players' very own version of Christmas.
Party on, nerds.
