Tavi Gevinson Is Cooler Than All Of Us
At 20 years old, Tavi Gevinson is barely out of high school. And yet, she has more accomplishments under her belt (or whatever the cool kids are wearing these days) than someone twice her age. We've watched her blossom from a style blogger wunderkind to a badass editor-in-cheif to a Broadway actress. When I was 20, I spent most of my time eating Lean Cuisines and binge-watching 'The Office.'
Here's why Tavi is a mega-inspiring dream BFF for creative gals of all ages.
1. She's been a style icon since she was 11
Tavi started her own fashion blog, 'Style Rookie,' in 2008 when she was just 11 years old. With her distinctive outfits and deft commentary, she reminded even the most seasoned fashion snobs that style is all about dress-up and self-expression.
2. She wears everything with mad confidence
Here she is showing us how to be a grown-ass woman at the 2016 Met Gala.
3. Her magazine Rookie is literally the best thing ever
An outgrowth of her earlier blog, Rookie mag combines excellent material from writers like Miranda July, Jenny Zhang, and Lena Dunham with diary entries, essays, and fangirl collages submitted by readers. Rookie is everything I loved about being a teenage girl articulated in a sharp, hilarious, heartfelt voice.
4. She's friends with all the badass creative ladies
Here she is casually hangin' out with Kiernan Shipka of "Mad Men'"and Amandla Stenberg of "The Hunger Games" and Twitter fame. She's also been known to rub elbows with Gloria Steinem, Kathleen Hanna, Anna Wintour, Mae Whitman, and basically like every cool/smart/talented woman you've ever heard of.
5. Including Stevie Nicks 😱
Enough said.
6. She has a dope NYC apartment and was nice enough to give us a tour
Check out her vintage pink-tiled bathroom and stacks on stacks of rainbow notebooks in this video tour she did with Teen Vogue.
7. She supports other women fighting the good fight.
Back in 2012, Tavi organized a get-well-soon drive for Malala Yousafzai. Girls from all over the world to sent positive messages of encouragement to Malala as she recovered from an assassination attempt for defending girls' education rights in Afghanistan.
8. She used her time before college to perform on Broadway.
Before heading to NYU, Tavi took a break from school to pursue an interest in acting. After high school she starred in 'This Is Our Youth' with Michael Cera and Kieran Culkin. Here she is in 'The Crucible' giving 'em hell on Broadway.
9. She looks like a tiny Terry Gross and is every bit as talented.
Like the beloved 'Fresh Air' host with whom she shares a haircut, Tavi is a gifted critic and storyteller who uses her platform to share the voices of others. We'll be following her career for years to come.
