Misty Copeland's Barbie Is An Inspiration To Girls Everywhere
Misty Copeland is an icon for us all.
Mattel—the parent company behind the iconic Barbie doll—has taken many measures in the last few years to create a doll that is more inclusive. Oftentimes criticized for being a seemingly frivolous and superficial toy, the doll now comes in a variety of heights, body types and skin tones, while encouraging young girls to imagine the possibilities.
The company's latest effort includes dolls in the likeness of several "Sheroes," women who are breaking barriers and changing their industries for the better. Oscar-nominated director Ava Duvernay's doll sold out in minutes and Zendaya's Barbie capitalized on a moment where she publically shamed for her hair style. The latest addition to the line of "Shereos" features a woman at the height of her career, whose doll recreates the moment that changed it all for her.
Misty Copeland, principal dancer for the American Ballet Theater, is the latest "Shero" to have a Barbie created in her likeness.
Misty is the first black woman to become principal dancer at the ABT.
The dress worn by her doll was inspired by her role in The Firebird.
This is an extremely prestigious position and was her first starring role since she became a principal at ABT.
"I was a very shy girl, so I felt this instant connection with Barbie. She was a way for me to dream," said Copeland.
