The Reason These Men Struggle To Read Aloud To Women Is Deeply Disturbing
Some comments really are #MoreThanMean
Two female sports reporters, Sarah Spain and Julie DiCaro, partnered with the Just Not Sports podcast to confront the vile online harassment they (and many female journalists like them) face every day.
Sarah and Julie asked real men to read anonymous trollers' mean comments aloud to their faces.
The men reading the comments in the video are not the trolls themselves.
At first, the women were quick to point out the ignorance of many comments.
"Not even married yet," Sarah quipped in response to this tweet.
Sarah and Julie had seen all of the comments before, but the men had not.
"This is why we don't hire any females unless we want our cock sucked or our food cooked," one read.
As the trollers' comments got more and more vulgar, the men were visibly uncomfortable, couldn't make eye contact and had trouble reading the comments. One even asked, "I have to read all of them, right?"
"I hope your boyfriend beats you" and "I hope you get raped again" were among the more vicious comments.
Julie has spoken out publicly about her rape. Many comments toward both women centered around physical and mental abuse.
Many of the male readers apologized for the comments and the producers said the awkward tension in the room was palpable.
Since the video was posted, the women have received an outpouring of social media support, but the harassment happens everyday to thousands of others.
