The Director Of 'Aladdin' Just Confirmed This Fan Theory And We're Freaking
It makes so much sense now!
Obviously, "Aladdin" is one of the best Disney movies.
When it came out in 1992, everyone was just like, "damn. That was good." Thanks to amazing songs, a heartwarming story and an unrivaled comedic performance from the late Robin Williams, loyal fans are still cooking up theories more than 20 years later.
The funny thing about fan theories, though, is that they're practically never confirmed nor denied by the original creators.
Historically, they've just existed in the nether-space that is the Internet, sometimes gaining a little traction, but often petering out after they get their time in the web's spotlight. That is, until now.
In a recent interview with E! News, Ron Clements, one of the two directors of "Aladdin," confirmed one classic fan theory about the film.
And we couldn't be more excited.
The theory that was confirmed? The the peddler seen at the beginning of the film was The Genie the whole time!
According to Clements' interview with E! News, having the peddler and The Genie be the same entity "was the whole intention, originally. We even had that at the end of the movie, where he would reveal himself to be the Genie, and of course Robin did the voice of the peddler. Just through story changes and some editing, we lost the reveal at the end. So, that's an urban legend that actually is true."
NO. WAY
I knew it!
Yes way. Straight from the director's mouth.
In the interview, the makers of "Aladdin" also dispelled other longstanding rumors, such as the theory that the film takes place in a distant post-apocalyptic future, and the thought that Aladdin was encouraging teens to take off their clothes in a particular line he uttered.
The original interview with E! News was in tandem with the Diamond Edition re-release of the Disney classic on Blu-ray and digital. I know I'll be buying it and looking for a few fan theories of my own.
