'An African City's' Nana Yaa Is The New Carrie Bradshaw—Shoes And All
Presenting: the African sisters of our favorite NYC gals.
Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha are forever in our hearts and in our DVR recordings, but there's a NEW girl gang in town.
...or rather, out of town. The answer to our entertainment prayers comes from—you guessed it—Accra, Ghana. Wait, you didn't guess that?
Yep! "An African City" is the Ghanian equivalent of our beloved "Sex and the City" and it's serving up every bit as much sex, love and relationship dirt as the HBO series that inspired it.
The web series, which debuted in 2014, is centered around the turbulent love lives of five gal pals, Nana Yaa, Ngozi, Sade, Makena and Zainab. All five heroines have just returned to their homeland to explore new career and love ventures.
Each character is an example of a strong, stylish woman —and like our NYC babes, each one is totally unique.
Which leads to the question: Are you a Nana Yaa, Makena, Sade, Ngozi or Zainab? Here's everything you need to know about your NEW favorite clique.
The creative powerhouse, Nana Yaa:
If you consider yourself a Carrie, you'll probably liken yourself to the bold and beautiful Nana Yaa. She's the daughter of a former diplomat and is returning home to Ghana from New York. In her home country, she's employed as a journalist (sound familiar?) and radio talk show host, covering relationship and cultural issues. Nana Yaa is candid, sentimental, passionate and the best kind of neurotic. Her style is New York chic with a flair for traditional Ghanian prints.
The brilliant lawyer, Makena:
Think Miranda Hobbs. Makena was born in Kenya and raised in London. She returns to Africa a tough, Oxford-educated divorce lawyer. Recently divorced herself, she's also without a job. She's brilliant, fierce and beautiful. Makena passionately defends women's roles, both professionally and in relationships. She's often flaunting chic and feminine business wear, accessorized with a cigarette.
The sweet innocent, Ngozi:
Ngozi plays the conservative one of the bunch. She's a bit traditional, but totally charming and pure. She was originally born in Silver Spring, Maryland to Nigerian parents and moved to Accra after being offered a job with a development agency. As a Christian, Ngozi is completely celibate and waiting for sex until after marriage. Religious beliefs aside, she's an excellent friend who gives sex and dating guidance to her pals. Ngozi doesn't shy away from bold prints and colors in her wardrobe, but typically errs on the prudent side.
The promiscuous Sade:
If you're a Sade, sex is top priority.
Sade has many gentleman callers who love to spoil her (and she doesn't hate it, either). With a no-apologies attitude, Sade is very confident and comfortable in her own skin. She was born and raised in Houston, Texas to a Nigerian pastor and his Ghanian wife. She graduated from Harvard Business School and spent her professional life in Boston. She's now living in Ghana as the marketing manager for an Accra bank. It comes as no surprise that this gorgeous minx leaves little to the imagination, proudly flaunting her figure in low-cut and body-con dresses paired with designer heels.
The feminist businesswoman, Zainab:
Zainab is a lady in charge. Literally. Not only is she a devout feminist (hairy pits included), but she's also an entrepreneur with her own shea butter empire. She was born in Sierra Leone but raised in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to being a woman with major ambition, she has a heart of gold and aids impoverished women in Ghana. This bright and driven woman focuses most of her attention on work rather than lovers. She asserts her authority in her dress as well, donning boldly-patterned dresses and blouses.
