In The Wake Of Garry Shandling's Death, 'Larry Sanders' Will Be Back On TV
The funniest show of all time is coming back to TV!
In case you haven't heard: Beloved actor, comedian and writer, Garry Shandling, died on March 24th.
You may know Shandling from the recent films "Iron Man 2" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," but he is doubtlessly best known for playing the title character on the classic "The Larry Sanders Show."
While no official cause of death has been announced yet, Shandling's publicist Alan Nierob believes the comedic legend died of a massive heart attack. It's certainly a tragedy for Hollywood, and the comedy world at large.
While Shandling's tragic death came far too soon, his legacy lives on. "The Larry Sanders Show" is coming back to HBO!
"The Larry Sanders Show," a mock behind-the-scenes talk show, which originally aired on HBO from 1992 to 1998, is one of the most classic, influential and important TV comedies of all time. If you've never seen it, do yourself a favor and tune into HBO when it's back on the air.
There's no word yet on exactly when the show will return, but according to The Wrap, Shandling made a deal with HBO just before his death to return the original "Larry Sanders" to the network. It's going to be rerun heaven.
"The Larry Sanders Show" was a comedy ahead of its time.
Today, we're familiar with mockumentary-style shows, on which celebrities play exaggerated versions of themselves. But "Larry Sanders" was the true original. There was nothing quite like it at the time—it both parodied the late-night show template and closely examined the loneliness between performance of celebrity and real life. It was also just a damn good satire of show business.
While some of the reruns seem dated now, the originality of the show's concept and humor hold up. It features amazing comedic performances from a younger Jeffrey Tambor and a slightly more spry Rip Torn in some of their best roles.
Many of the amazing TV shows and films we have today exist because of "The Larry Sanders Show."
"Larry Sanders" helped kickstart the careers of Judd Apatow and Sarah Silverman, both of whom wrote for the show, and Janeane Garofalo and Jeremy Piven, who each acted in several episodes. In watching reruns of "Larry Sanders," you'll see many of today's biggest comedic stars when they were starting out. It's an amazing pleasure, but it's certainly not a coincidence.
So tune into HBO soon to check out this classic show. You don't want to miss it!
