16 Early '00s TV Outfits You Thought Were Stylish But Are Cringeworthy Now
Pretty much everything Lizzie McGuire wore.
1. Shawn Hunter's shell necklace
Me in the early '00s: Obviously, only cool guys wear shell necklaces. It's so edgy and badass.
Me in 2016: Whenever a guy has a shell necklace on in any of his Tinder pics, I automatically assume he's dealing with some serious childhood trauma.
My early '00s self would be crushed.
2. Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie's farm outfits
Me in the early '00s: How does one manage to look this stylish on a FARM? I want to BE Paris and Nicole just so I can wear a cowboy hat and tank top.
Me in 2016: No way in hell I'd wear a cowboy hat, let alone go to a farm. Not even if you paid me in Beyoncé tickets.
3. Summer Robert's Juicy Couture tracksuit
Me in the early '00s: Please mom, will you buy me a yellow Juicy Couture tracksuit for my birthday? PLEASE?
Me in 2016: Just donated that bad boy to Goodwill so a preteen can ask, "ew mom what is this?" and she can tell her it used to be fashion... 'cause hahaha.
4. Lizzie McGuire's bedazzled bandana
Me in the early '00s: Lizzie wears the coolest clothes ever! Everything is perfectly color coordinated and bedazzled, even. Magic.
Me in 2016: Anyone wearing a sparkly bandana is probably going to break into my apartment and give me night terrors for the rest of my life.
5. Summer's bikini and denim skirt combo
"Chino? Ew!"
Me in the early '00s: Summer Roberts = beach goals. That floral bikini and denim skirt with a matching sash is the perfect beach party outfit.
Me in 2016: "Denim skirt and bikini top? Ew!"
6. Literally all of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore's clothes
Me in the early '00s: If I wear cardigans and printed shirts, will I fit into Stars Hollow? Yeah? OK cool, doing it.
Me in 2016: My Christian rock-loving grandmas wears printed cardigans. 'Nuff said.
7. Lizzie McGuire's unicorn sweater
Me in the early '00s: GOALS GOALS GOALS GOALS. We need to be friends.
Me in 2016: GOALS GOALS GOALS GOALS. We need to be friends (no bedazzled bandana though, please and thank you).
8. LC's off-the-shoulder shirt
Me in the early '00s: Who cares if I don't have boobs? An off-the-shoulder top will definitely impress my crush!
Me in 2016: Lol, still have no boobs to show off.
9. Brooke Davis' shrug
Me in the early '00s: Such a stylish and practical accessory! How nifty the way it fastens across the chest! Must have.
Me in 2016: Is it just me or is Brooke Davis' shrug a staple of Goodwill? It's like everyone realized it wasn't cool at the same time, donated it and no one ever wants to be seen it in again. RIP, shrug. It was fun while it lasted.
10. Summer and Marissa's low cut tanks
Me in the early '00s: I don't care that I live in Chicago and it's zero below, I just want to wear pretty tank tops like Summer and Marissa.
Me in 2016: If I went out of the house like this people would assume I'm a 12-year-old boy wearing lingerie just for shitz and giggles.
11. Raven's matching blue everything
Me in the early '00s: YASSS QUEEN.
Me in 2016: Only sports teams should match...and even then, it's a bit much.
12. Joey Potter's peasant tops and boyfriend jeans
Me in the early '00s: She's the ultimate girl next door. Of course she manages to be both stylish and comfy.
Me in 2016: I'm broke but I ain't no peasant. Well, I'll take my baggy tees over anything, so say what ya will about me... I'm a grown-ass woman.
13. Veronica Mars' cargo/camo outfit combo
Me in the early '00s: Holy shit this girl is so cool. She's a student, a detective and a style icon.
Me in 2016: Is Hot Topic still in business? Just in case some of us wanted to time travel to the early 2000s and live through fashion hell again? Asking for a friend.
14. Hannah Montana's ruffled dress-over-shirt combo
Me in the early '00s: A dress over a shirt? What a great idea! They don't even have to match!
Me in 2016: Who the f*ck thought of this? Honestly, this is probably why she loves being naked now so much.
15. Everything Sharpay and Lucas wore in "High School Musical"
Me in the early '00s: Dynamic duo, slaying alwayssss. Check out Sharpay's bucket purse, and matching cardigan and how perfectly it goes with her dress and hat - amazing!
Me in 2016: Whoa, way too much matching (see: #11) going on. TBH, I used to be scared shitless of Sharpay but looking at this horrid fashion choice makes me feel like I have the power now. And that my friends, is a wonderful feeling.
16. Laguna Beach crew's shirt-tied-around-the-waist look
Me in the early 2000s: How does one become stylish, popular and gorgeous like all of the "Laguna Beach" cast? Please advise.
Me in 2016: Unless I'm sweating bullets and am trapped on an abandoned island where no one (not even my Instagram followers) will be able to see me I will then, at the very least, consider tying my shirt around my waist.
JK I did this very recently and am v. embarrassed about it. Am I trying to bring back the early 2000s? Maybe! And when I get there, you'll be the first to know.
