Ridiculously Ironic: Gun Activist In Florida Accidentally Shot By Her Child
Don't worry - except for having a massively irresponsible parent, the kid is totally fine.
Jamie Gilt is a 31-year-old mother and extreme pro-gun activist from Florida.
Jamie Gilt is totally nuts for guns. She even has a Facebook page called "Jamie Guilt for Gun Sense" (which has recently been deleted, but we'll get to that shortly) on which she regularly shares pro-gun memes, gun "facts" and "statistics," Ted Cruz quotes and Fox News stories. Her personal Facebook page is much the same. Gilt also has a 4-year-old son who she regularly takes to the shooting range, presumably because she wants to prove to the world that guns are extremely safe and that everyone should have the right to own a gun.
But in a stunning twist of irony that simply couldn't be made up, Gilt was accidentally shot in the back by her 4-year-old son.
And that's why Gilt's Facebook pages have been deleted.
Guilt was out driving her truck with her son in the back seat when she suffered the non-fatal gunshot wound.
For whatever reason, it appears her son was not restrained during the afternoon drive (which is illegal in the state of Florida), but that's not even close to the most illegal thing that happened in the incident. Gilt had left the gun - which was still loaded - in a place where her child could reach it, and that was a violation of Florida's Child Access Prevention law. Thankfully, no one died. The bullet went through the driver's side seat before striking Gilt in the back.
Gilt will most likely be charged with a number of criminal offenses and her son is currently in the care of relatives. But the irony of the incident is something that won't soon be forgotten.
There are a lot of unanswered questions about the incident still. For instance, will Gilt continue to post memes like this? More importantly, will she actually learn anything from this disaster? This is probably the most embarrassing thing that could possibly happen to her, because she exposed every single hole in the arguments of the pro-gun rhetoric she'd built her entire life around in literally less than one second.
Moral of the story: stubbornness is not a viable reason for gun ownership.
We're living in an age where it's simply not reasonable to think the second amendment is meant to go unquestioned or unchanged. Obviously, Gilt herself has proven that not everyone is smart enough or responsible enough to own a gun. What if her toddler son had shot himself instead of her? What if your child did the same? All people should have the right to defend themselves, but the inalienable right of everyone to have a gun is not meant for our modern, densely populated society that is so prone to knee-jerk reactions. As Abraham Maslow famously said, "I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail."
