The 2016 Oscars Were Full Of Some Great Moments... And Terrible Ones, Too
We were all Chrissy Teigen when Stacey Dash came on stage.
The 88th Academy Awards aired on Feb. 28, and it was full of biting racial commentary, big wins, and of course, some moments that had us all saying WTF.
Here are the best moments of the night:
1. Chris Rock's opening monologue where he addressed #OscarsSoWhite
Chris Rock didn't just acknowledge the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, he full-on roasted Hollywood and the Academy. He acknowledged the lack of black nominees and called Hollywood racist, joking it was more "sorority racist" than anything.
The comedian also went in for an extremely edgy, uncomfortable joke which made people in the audience squirm: "We were too busy being raped and lynched to care about who won Best Cinematographer." Yep, he went there.
2. Will Smith gets snubbed in Black History Oscars skit, while Jack Black gets honored
Will and Jada Smith made it clear that they were boycotting the Oscars this year - so when Angela Bassett came on our screens to "honor" someone who is an actor, musician, and producer for Black History Month, no one expected Jack Black to be the honoree. Well played, Oscars.
3. Lady Gaga cries during passionate performance of "Til It Happens To You"
Introduced by Joe Biden, Lady Gaga gave a heart-wrenching performance of "Til It Happens To You," and it was arguably the highlight of the night. Not only did her powerful voice carry throughout the song's entirety, but you could tell she was extremely passionate about the hard subject of the song, which was used in the documentary "The Hunting Ground," about sexual assault on college campuses. Towards the end of the song, rape survivors joined Gaga on stage, and it's impossible not to cry tears of your own while you're watching this.
4. The hilarious #OscarsSoWhite parody, where black people were added to the nominated movies
Chris Rock re-imagined the Oscar-nominated films with black actors, making one hilarious parody. From Whoopi Goldberg in "Joy" to Tracy Morgan in "The Danish Girl" and Chris Rock in "The Martian" all of these segments poked fun at the lack of black nominees in the best way possible.
5. Leonardo DiCaprio finally wins an Oscar and the world becomes a better palce
All together now: *YASSSSSS*
After being nominated for an Oscar six times, Leo finally won! He acted so chill and confident about it, you would have think he was a pro at accepting these things! He also used his Oscar speech as an opportunity to talk about climate change, 'cause he cares so much about Earth's well-being. Go Leo!
Even Kanye was over the moon about Leo's big win:
Here are the worst/most cringeworthy moments of the night:
1. The shade given to Jenny Beaven, who won Best Costume Design for "Mad Max: Fury Road"
None of these guys could have at least clapped or pretended to be happy for her? Seriously?
2. Minions
Why are Minions still a thing?
3. Chris Rock selling Girl Scout cookies
Chris Rock decided to use the Oscars as a chance to - what else? - help his daughters sell Girl Scout Cookies. While I support the Girl Scouts and love Thin Mints, it just seemed random and unnecessary.
4. Stacey Dash becomes Director of Minority Outreach at the Oscars, and everyone cringed
By far the strangest thing of the night was when Chris Rock introduced Stacey Dash (yes, the woman that said that Black History Month and BET shouldn't exist) as the Director of Minority Outreach Program. Between her awkward giggles and wishing everyone a "happy Black History Month" it was no wonder everyone in the audience was cringing.
Chrissy Teigen pretty much summed up all of our reactions to Stacey's random cameo.
