Why 'Climb Every Mountain' Is A Lie + 6 More Surprising 'Sound of Music' Facts
After reading these fun facts, you'll want to re-watch this classic film.
1. The movie was actually based off of a book by the real Maria von Trapp
To go a little further, the 1965 film was based off the Broadway musical with the same name. The musical followed after the success of the German version of the film based on Maria von Trapp's original book.
2. The film was so popular, it ran in theaters for four and a half years
This is probably one of the reasons why the film is the fifth highest grossing film of all time.
3. There was actually a pretty significant age difference between the real Georg and Maria...
...like, 25 years. The real Maria was just 19 years old when she met the captain and his family.
4. To our disappointment, the couple wasn't actually in love
"I really and truly was not in love. I liked him, but I didn't love him. However, I loved the children, so in a way I really married the children."
This is probably the most disappointing fact of them all. Excuse me while I question everything I've ever believed in.
5. Georg and Maria actually had 10 children
After the couple married, they had three more children to add to their famous family between the years 1929 and 1939. Talk about a full house.
6. They didn't really 'Climb Every Mountain'
When the Nazi party tried to recruit Georg to join their German navy, the family actually took a train to Italy. Once in Italy, they took another trip - to the United States. The family ended up living in Vermont.
Forget what I said earlier, this is probably the most disappointing fact of them all.
7. You probably missed the real Maria von Trapp's cameo in the film
While Julie Andrews gracefully belts out "I Have Confidence," Maria and two of her daughters can be seen walking behind her. This is probably one of best cameos of all time.
