This Vet Does Something Amazing To Gain The Trust Of An Injured Pit Bull
This guy deserves a Human of the Year Award.
This Pit Bull's name is Graycie.
When Graycie was found injured, emaciated and hypothermic on a dirt road in Elberton, Georgia, she was brought into Granite Hills Animal Care. For two weeks, Graycie would barely eat and it was excessively clear she didn't trust humans.
To help her regain a bit of trust for those who wanted to help her, Dr. Andy Mathis climbed into her cage and did this.
It's perhaps one of the greatest - and simultaneously simplest - gestures of care for an animal we've ever seen. This video was taken after Graycie was nearly put down, but recovered - ultimately going through surgeries to fix hypothermia and a prolapse.
After Dr. Mathis sat next to Graycie in her cage, she seemed a little nervous. Clearly, she'd had some rough experiences with people.
Dr. Mathis was calm, and didn't force her to engage immediately.
After a bit, he served food to Graycie and himself, which he fittingly ate from a dog bowl.
If the goal was to make Graycie comfortable, this was a perfect choice. It's like he was saying, "look, I have to eat, just like you. We're the same." What a powerful message. She seemed to be more open to eating than she had been, and she certainly got more comfortable as the video went on.
Before long, Dr. Mathis had Graycie eating out of the palm of his hand, literally.
Maybe Graycie can learn to trust humans again, as long as they're as kind as Dr. Mathis.
By the end of the video, Graycie allowed Dr. Mathis to pet her.
Looks like she's on the way to a full recovery. Here's hoping she can find a nice family to adopt her.
