The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Moments Of The 2016 Grammys
From show-stopping performances, to unfortunate sound problems to some sweet revenge, here's a roundup of the best and most cringeworthy moments of the 2016 Grammys.
Best Moments:
1. Lady Gaga's spot-on tribute to David Bowie
It's clear that David Bowie is a huge influence on Lady Gaga - not only does she have a tattoo of Starman, but she walked the Grammys red carpet channeling her inner Bowie with red hair and a blue floor length jacket. She paid homage to the late legendary singer in a medley of nine of his hit songs, including "Changes" and "Space Oddidity" and did not disappoint. Between the lighting effects, which gave her Bowie-esque makeup, the incredible costume changes, her energy, and of course, her killer voice, Gaga proved there was no one better to pay tribute to Bowie. May his legacy live on.
2. Kendrick Lamar's performance, which people are calling the only performance that mattered
Kendrick made a huge statement in his performance, and it's safe to say that he stole the show. The rapper and his dancers walked out in chains and opened with "Blacker the Berry" before transitioning into "Alright." Between the pyrotechnic show, the map of Africa labeled "Compton" and the dancers in cages, not only did he bring down the house with his musical talents and energy but his tribute to modern slavery while challenging white America was chilling and powerful. Way to go, Kendrick.
3. Justin Bieber's acoustic performance which transitioned into one big dance party
Talk about a comeback for the Biebs. After showing up on the carpet with his little brother Jaxon Bieber, the singer sang an acoustic version of his song "Love Yourself" before transitioning to his dance hit with Skrillex and Diplo, "Where Are Ü Now." He was fresh off of winning his first ever Grammy (congrats, Biebs!) so you could tell he poured his passion into the performance and it made for one entertaining show.
4. Demi Lovato KILLING the Lionel Richie tribute
This was Demi Lovato's first time at the Grammys, and she nailed it. Everyone is talking about just how great her voice sounded (including celebs Katy Perry and Ariana Grande), and she even seemed to outshine the other stars she took the stage with.
Lionel Richie even seemed absolutely blown away by Demi's powerful pipes.
5. Taylor Swift wins album of the year and not-so-subtly puts Kanye West in his place after dissing her
As expected, Taylor Swift crushed it at the Grammys, and IMHO she and "1989" deserved it. A few days before the Grammys, Kanye West called her out in his new song, "Famous," rapping, "I made that bitch Taylor Swift famous." Well, Taylor had the last laugh at that one, because the superstar shut him down with this epic speech:
"As the first woman to win album of the year at the Grammys twice, I want to say to all the young women out there there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame, but if you just focus on the work and you don't let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you're going, you'll look around and know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there and that will be the greatest feeling int he world." 'Atta girl, Tay!
6. The Weeknd's soulful and sexy performance
The Weeknd always puts on a show, and that's just what he did on the Grammys stage, along with taking home a Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best R&B Performance for "Earned It." He belted out his Michael Jackson inspired hit "Can't Feel My Face" along with "In The Night" and earned a standing ovation from Adele, so that pretty much says it all. Slay.
Adele was all of us singing along.
Worst Moments:
1. The cringe-inducing sound on Adele's performance
Everyone knows the vocal powerhouse Adele is, but thanks to some bad sound technicalities, the performance was kind of a flop. Totally not her fault. And Adele, being the awesome person she is, explained herself to her fans, and ate her feelings in the form of In 'n' Out. She is HUMAN, guys.
2. Ariana Grande's super awkward pun when introducing The Weeknd
Remember when Ariana Grande was an actress? Yeah, it's probably good she's sticking to singing now, because girl totally flopped on her delivery of "the pun of the century" when introducing The Weeknd. The joke made a reference to his song "Earned It" but when no one laughed, she decided to sing some of the lyrics. In her defense, Ari ended up leaving the show early because she was sick, so maybe we'll blame it on her cold.
3. Everything about Pitbull's closing performance
Why they thought Pitbull should close down the Grammys is beyond me.
There was way too much going on and it was hard to keep up or even be excited about it. They even brought Sofia Vergara out on stage. WUT.
This was pretty much all of us while he was performing.
