Retailers Have Ignored Rey Toys From Star Wars, Here's How Hasbro Responded
Because Rey is badass AF.
"Star Wars" has had a hard time over the years incorporating female characters into their toy lines.
Target recently came under fire for excluding Rey from "The Force Awakens" from its action figure line. As this Twitter user notes, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to exclude Rey because "She's THE MAIN CHARACTER." According to Richard Gottlieb who works for Global Toy Experts, "Star Wars" is a "boy’s brand” and boys don't want to play with female action figures. Cool story, Hasbro.
Luckily, though, Hasbro has womaned up and included some awesome female figures from the franchise in their new toy line.
Apparently, the female toy characters that are out there have been hard to find - but luckily Hasbro's new line will beef up the inventory. The new line features Rey (looking cool as always), Finn, Maz Kanata and BB-8. The characters in this line are based on the Takodana scene from "The Force Awakens," and it's the first time Hasbro has made a Maz figure.
The new line also features a stunning six-inch Leia figuringe, as she appeared in "Star Wars: a New Hope."
She don't need no help from Obi-Wan - or any other man, for that matter.
Fans of the animated series "Star Wars Rebels" will also be able to get a realistic version of Sabine Wren.
The figure won second place in Hasbro's "Fan's Choice" contest, which partially determines the toys the company will make, but the company decided to make the figurine anyway. It's unclear whether or not this was done in response to the lack of female representation already in place in "Star Wars" toy lines.
"Star Wars Rebels" fans can also get a less realistic version of Sabine Wren, as well as a cool Seventh Sister figurine.
Check out Hasbro's website for a full line of their "Star Wars" toys. Keep up the representation, Hasbro! It only makes sense to include the main character in a toy line. Forget what you've been told, boys will play with a Rey figurine. She's cool AF. I know I would.
