Robin Williams' Deleted Scenes From 'Mrs. Doubtfire' Are Super Depressing
"Mrs. Doubtfire" could have been a whole lot of depressing.
You remember "Mrs. Doubtfire," the 1993 dark comedy starring Robin Williams, who dresses up as an elderly British nanny so that he can secretly be with his children after his divorce.
A set of deleted scenes were recently uploaded to Matthew Keys' YouTube account, showing the dark direction the film could have gone in. Given Williams' death in 2014, some of these are a real tear jerker.
In the first scene, Williams is late to his daughter's spelling bee and gets into an argument with his ex-wife, which messes her up.
After the spelling bee, Williams has a tearful conversation with his daughter, who asks why he can't just pretend to be as cheerful as Mrs. Doubtfire.
“Life’s more real and wonderful than [acting 24 hours a day],” Williams tells her. “Acting...it’s nice but it’s a job.”
This is really tearing at our heartstrings, considering the way we lost Williams - but it also showcases the comedian's talent as a dramatic actor. He was able to add depth and dimension to his most humorous characters while making them seem human.
The last scene shows the three kids overhearing their parents' screaming match. It zooms in on each of their faces as they're going at it, and it's heartbreaking. Easy to see why this one was left out, too.
I think we can pretty much all agree et's just stick to the Mrs. Doubtfire we know and love.
