by N/A, 9 years ago | 3 min read

His wife of nearly 60 years passed, so he made a monument of their love.

For the music video of their recent single "Monument," the band Mutemath wanted to focus on one man named "LaLa" and him and his late wife's touching story.

You can check more on the band on their website - which I'd strongly encourage because they're awesome.

Charles "LaLa" Evans and his wife, Louise, were married for nearly 60 years, and their story started early on.

As beautiful as their relationship was, it came to an end recently when Louise passed away.

But it ended in the most fitting way, with her last words being "I love you." Beautiful, indeed.

Since her passing, LaLa began gathering up photos of him and Louise from their 60-plus years together, eventually lining an entire room with them.

“I call it LaLa and Louise Land,” LaLa told BuzzFeed. “Over the years we collected the pictures, and before she passed I said, ‘Well, we are gonna have to do something with these pictures.’ And that’s how it began.”

The room, or "LaLa and Louise Land," is their story in the form of pictures - a "monument" of their love.

“Every Sunday, before or after church, she’d have me take her picture. And that’s how the collection grew — so much memorabilia and pictures and everything.”

LaLa also put together another memento commemorating Louise, which he calls "The Umbrella Grove."

“On any given day I look out at any umbrella and see her smiling at me,” LaLa said.

He even gives tours to curious passers-by that come to his door asking what they're there for. “It’s a treasure for me to let other people see what we tried to do,” he said.

And while many would expect a bereaved man to be down and out, LaLa's been able to more than maintain his happiness, mainly because he still gets to experience Louise on a daily basis through her monuments.

And as you can see, he loves to dance - something both him and Louise shared. “I’ve always loved music. I grew up with a musical background,” he said. “And we used to love to dance. I actually taught my wife how to dance. She knew that I loved it and she didn’t know how, so I taught her.”

As for the the video itself, LaLa says he’s “so grateful to be a little part of it.”

And he firmly believes Louise would've loved it too.

“Oh she would have loved it. She’s loving it now. Yeah, she would’ve been a little bashful about it because she’s a bashful kinda lady, but she would have loved it.”

LaLa even had some relationship advice to give everyone. “I tell people, ‘put that lady first!’ There’ll be some ups and downs, but work hard at it.”

“People come to me saying they have their problems and want to know how we do it. I tell them, ‘It’s all about love, that’s the key.’”

We may not know LaLa personally, but it doesn't take meeting him to know he knows more than just a thing or two about love.

Although, we'd love nothing more than to meet him...

And if you're ever in Starkville, Mississippi and happen to spot his Umbrella Grove, you can. Something tells me he'd welcome a new face.
