Meet Steve Noviello, a journalist for Fox 4 in Dallas. He's a consumer reporter and anchor who covers bargain hunting, money-saving tips and the like.
Recently, while he was out shopping with a friend at Nebraska Furniture Mart, he stumbled across a strange pillow.
The sequin “Mermaid Pillows," as they're called, change colors when you “draw” on them with your hand. Noviello was so amused by them, he decided to "live stream" his friend playing with them.
It's basically a dry-erase board but with sequins. Except we're not sure quite how it works yet.
Actually, no one really is.
Over 1,000 people wound up tuning into Noviello and his friend's little live feed, to both their surprise.
“We were blown away that many people would stop what they were doing on a Sunday afternoon to watch us goofing around with some pillow,” he said.
But it gets better. Since Noviello first posted it, the video has been viewed more than 33 million times, along with having over half a million shares.
33 million views. Of some guy playing with a pillow. Just soak that in.
And people are losing their minds over the amazing "Mermaid Pillow."
Noviello says that he's received emails from women all over the world - one even in Iraq - inquiring where they can find them.
“People really seem to love them,” he said.
But there's one major drawback to the magical novelty pillows. They're HELLA expensive.
Naturally, Nebraska Furniture Mart is taking advantage of the craze and using the opportunity for promotion via a contest to win a pair of the "Aviva Stanoff Design" pillows.
Noviello has also found similar pillows for cheaper, although of course not as high in quality. There's one for $99 and another for just $39.
For Noviello, well, he can't decide quite how to feel about having a video of a pillow be his most viewed story, in all his years as an anchor.
Just based off of mere interpretation alone, he seems pretty conflicted. “I’ve been a TV journalist for almost 20 years, I have six Emmys sitting on the shelf,” he said. “[And] the most watched piece of video that I will probably ever produce in my career is about some pillow.”
But not just any pillow, Steve. A MERMAID PILLOW.
