We Love You, Taylor Swift, But It's Time To Let Go Of These 10 Symbols In Your Songs
Ok, I love Taylor Swift. A good T-Swift song has the power of transforming my day and is the first thing I'll put on after a bad date or troubling boy situation.
But is it just me, or does she tell the same stories over and over again in her songs? Of course, she's known as the queen of breakup songs, but it seems like she's exhausted the use of these ten things in her music. At this point, I'm even confident I can write my own Taylor lyrics.
We know we have Taylor to thank for keeping red lips in style, but there are so many songs where she sings about red lips. We get it Tay. Red lips are your thing.
Examples: "Red lips and rosy cheeks/ Say you'll see me again" ("Wildest Dreams"), "I got that red lip classic thing that you like" ("Style")
Taylor's birthday is in December, so I guess it's her favorite month? It's also the month when things were heating up with her ex flame, Harry Styles.
Examples: "Looking at it now, last December/ We were built to fall apart, then fall back together" ("Out of the Woods"), "And I go back to December all the time" ("Back to December")
T-Swizzle stirred up tons of rumors that "Style" and "Out of the Woods" were about Harry, because of the paper airplane necklace motif in her songs. In case you're not caught up to speed, Tay was photographed wearing the necklace, rumored to be from Harry, when they were dating. Fans went crazy after spotting her cradling the necklace in the "Style" music video.
Examples: "Two paper airplanes flying, flying, flying/ And I remember thinking" ("Out of the Woods")
Taylor romanticizes big cities in her songs, despite the fact that she's a country gal at heart.
Examples: “Someday I’ll be living in a big ol’ city / And all you’re ever gonna be is mean” (“Mean”), “So here I am in my new apartment / In a big city, they just dropped me off” (“Never Grow Up”), "He said, 'Let's get out of this town, Drive out of the city, away from the crowds'" ("Wildest Dreams")
This is part of why people love her so much - we are all Tay!
Examples: “I’m wonderstruck, dancing around all alone” (“Enchanted”), “I’m dancing on my own / I make the moves up as I go” (“Shake It Off”)
There's also that scene in the "You Belong With Me" video where she sings into her hairbrush and dances.
Just when things are perfect with a boy, there's a big blowout. Either they kiss and makeup or she gets revenge.
Examples: "And I remember that fight, two-thirty a.m..." ("Mine"); "I'm really gonna miss you picking fights/ And me falling for it screaming that I'm right" ("We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together"); "Screaming, crying, perfect storm storm/ I can make all the tables turn" ("Blank Space"); "But I miss screaming and fighting and kissing in the rain" ("That's The Way I Loved You")
Oh, Taylor. Stop being a hopeless romantic.
Examples: "And I stare at the phone / He still hasn’t called / And then you feel so low you can’t feel nothing at all” (“Forever & Always”); Me and my stupid pride are sitting here alone / Going through the photographs, staring at the phone” (“The Other Side of the Door”)
Also, "Dreading the phone" (“Dear John”)
Because love is more romantic in the middle of the night I guess.
Examples: "Midnight, You come and pick me up, no headlights" ("Style"); " "Oh, I remember you driving to my house / In the middle of the night” (“You Belong With Me”); "'Cause there we are again in the middle of the night” (“All Too Well”)
Shout outs to: 2:00 AM (“The Way I Loved You,” “Enchanted”); 2:30 AM (“Mine”);
Roses are a classic symbol of romance, but she uses her rose imagery to the extreme.
Examples: "Rose gardens filled with thorns" ("Blank Space"); “I almost didn’t notice / All the roses / And the note that said…” (“Our Song”); “You gave me roses and I left them there to die” (“Back to December”)
Taylor references hipsters or people being cooler than her in a couple of her songs... whether ironically or not.
Examples: "It feels like a perfect night to dress up like hipsters" ("22"); "With some indie record that’s much cooler than mine” (“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”)
Ok, Taylor is literally wearing a dress in every song she has.
Examples: "Say you'll remember me/ Standing in a nice dress staring at the sunset" ("Wildest Dreams"); And I broke down crying, was she worth this mess? / After everything and that little black dress” (“The Other Side of the Door”); "Today was a fairytale/ I wore a dress/ You wore a dark gray t-shirt" ("Today Was a Fairytale")
