How many puppies do you think are in this Great Dane's litter? Hint: it's a lot.
This is Velma. She's 4 years old, and she lives with her owners in Alabama. As you can see, she recently gave birth to a litter of puppies.
But it was no ordinary litter of pups–how many pups do you see here?
Great Danes usually average around 8 puppies per litter (though the range can vary significantly), but Velma birthed 19 PUPPIES.
Yes, you read that correctly. 19 puppies. The birthing process took nearly a full day to complete.
Only once before has a U.S. Great Dane birthed so many puppies.
Velma was only expected to have 10 puppies, so the litter was a surprise to both mom and her owners! When necessary, the owners helped to feed the pups, because it was a little overwhelming for Velma.
Could you imagine having to care for 19 little ones? It must be exhausting, but she still looks like one happy mom.
Good job mom!
