A Delicacy Offered In This Chinese City Is So Gross You May Be Sick Just Reading About It

by N/A, 9 years ago | 1 min read

Not necessarily what most people have in mind when they think of an easy-to-make meal.

creepy wtf weird photos China Food/Cooking Bizarre/Oddities Non-Premium

For centuries, each spring, the people of Dongyang have enjoyed a delicacy found nowhere else in the world.

And for good reason. "Tong zi dan," which roughly translates to "boy egg," is easily one of the most bizarre and grotesque delicacy's out there.

The cultural treat is easy to make and consists of two simple ingredients: eggs and urine.

First, the eggs are hardboiled in urine for a period of time, then they're partially cracked and placed back in a pot of urine to further absorb..."flavor."

To make things even more disturbing, during the time when local restaurants all begin boiling the eggs, locals refer to the pungent scent as "the smell of spring." *shudders*

And remember how "tong zi dan" roughly translates to "boy egg"? Yeah, there's a reason for that.

To make this whole "cultural delicacy" even more deranged, the urine used is the urine of YOUNG BOYS.

That's right folks. Each spring, as tong zi dan season is approaching, local elementary schools encourage their male students to pee in buckets placed outside. Once full, the schools then sell the urine to restaurants. *more shuddering*

So yeah, it's pretty much the creepiest, grossest, most socially unacceptable food tradition known to man.

But it's not so nauseating to locals - obviously, they've celebrated the "delicacy" for centuries.

“It is so yummy. I can eat 10 within a day,” one Dongyang resident says, who only just moved there with her husband only a few years ago. “I’d never tried it before. After my first taste of it, I’ve become addicted to it." *violent shuddering*

There are plenty of things worth using the "don't knock it 'til you try it" saying for, but I think we can all agree, "tong zi dan" is NOT one of them.
