You've seen reflections used in photography, but never like this...
A few years ago, Australian wedding photographer Peter Adams-Shawn discovered something that would forever change the way he took pictures...
At a wedding he was photographing for in 2011, while playing with reflections, he captured an incredible photo of a young flower girl watching the bride have her hair done.
The talented photographer immediately realized that he had stumbled upon something brilliant - landscape pictures captured in the reflections of onlookers' eyes.
Or, as he now fittingly refers to them, "eyescapes."
Adams-Shawn had always previously made a point of incorporating the use of reflections into his shots...
But never before like this.
His work is so unbelievable - literally - that the head International Loupe Awards judge assumed it was a composite.
After some convincing though, Adams-Shawn revealed his process and the judge apologized for the presumption. If anything though, the talented photographer had to have been flattered that a seasoned expert of photography was so baffled by his work that he felt forced to assume it was falsely made.
But make no mistake, the Australian photographer's magnificent shots are 100% authentic.
So what camera does he use to capture them?
“I use a Canon 5D Mk III which offers the ability to focus – as you can imagine, if you or the subject move a fraction of a millimetre, the focus is lost," Adams-Shawn shares with Techly.
As far as his technique goes, well, Adams-Shawn isn't about to disclose his entire process.
But he does provide a useful tip for photographers wanting to experiment with "eyescapes."
“One other secret – the best frames I’ve captured have had the subject smiling,” Adams-Shawn tells Techly. “This relaxes the shot, brings natural creases in the eyes, and even this close, you can tell the subject is smiling.”
His next reflection project? "Bubblescapes." And something tells me it's not going to disappoint.
