It's not often that someone risks their life to help a poisonous animal be a little more comfortable - least of all a pufferfish, which has a certain...unpredictable reputation.
Recently, scuba diver Kye Bolen risked his life helping remove a hook from a pufferfish's mouth - a task most divers wouldn't dare consider, given pufferfish's lethal defense mechanism.
According to National Geographic, "Almost all pufferfish contain tetrodotoxin, a substance that makes them foul tasting and often lethal to fish. To humans, tetrodotoxin is deadly, up to 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide. There is enough toxin in one pufferfish to kill 30 adult humans, and there is no known antidote."
In theory, Bolen could've been killed, depending on the severity of exposure to the toxin. But oddly enough, this puffer fish almost seemed to know he was being helped, and remained calm.
Fortunately, Bolen's admirable act of kindness ended swimmingly - for both him and Mr. Pufferfish.
