David Spade Remembers "Fat Guy in a Little Coat" Very Differently Than the Rest of Us

by N/A, 10 years ago | 2 min read

Tommy Boy is just one of the many Chris Farley and David Spade moments that had audiences rolling in tears of laughter. From their days as Saturday Night Live cast members to their moments on the big screen, the duo had a chemistry that nearly goes unrivaled. One of the funniest scenes–without question–if when Chris Farley sings "Fat guy in a little coat. Fat guy in a little coooooat," and is doing just that. Well, that wasn't written for the movie, rather it's just a way Farley pestered Spade.

You remember the scene: Richard (David Spade) isn't in the best of moods. Sales aren't going well on the trip across the country to try and salvage what's left of Callahan Auto.
That's when Tommy (Chris Farley) decides to try and cheer him up with a little song and dance he calls "Fat guy in a little coat." Well, you remember what happens next (if somehow you don't or haven't seen this, it's pretty easy to guess).
The origins of this memorable piece of cinematic comedy can be traced back the Farley and Spade's days on the "Saturday Night Live" cast. As you'll hear Spade explain on Conan, it pretty much went down the same way it did in the movie.

Just how many coats did Farley ruin in perfecting his "fat guy in a little coat" routine? Can you imagine trying to get anything done around Farley if every time you turned around he was ripping one of your jackets in two? Good thing doing just that was his livelihood and audiences got the joy of his antics for years.

Here's the original scene for good measure. It's funny to think this was just a filler that the cast and crew basically said "whatever" to, and then became on of the most memorable moments in the movie.

So again, if somehow you've never seen this, we're just wondering what you've been doing with your life. Have you been living in a van…down by the river?! If so, you probably didn't get that reference either.
