These Cute Turtles Get Their Own Pimped Out Transportation System

by N/A, 10 years ago | 2 min read

Suma Aqualife Park is a tourist destination in Japan that's one part aquarium, one part beach. Conveniently located next to a railway station, tourists can ride in and enjoy everything the park has to offer. However, the location isn't such a convenience for local turtles. Turtles risk getting stuck by passing trains if they attempt to cross the tracks. If struck, the turtles unfortunately (obviously) are killed, but this also causes delays and damage to the trains.

So, to avoid any further damage, delay or death to trains and turtles respectively, West Japan Railway Company teamed up with the park to create safe passage for these shelled explorers.
As you can see here, a turtle can easily get trapped between the rails and have no way out. It's really sad considering they are just trying to travel in their natural habitat, but human transportation and entertainment has caused this.
That's where these little gateways come into play and solve everything. The metal corridors allow turtles to travel freely between either side of the tracks, without having to summon 'The Tortoise and The Hare' speed to beat a train.

10 turtles have reportedly  been seen using the tracks since the April installation, which is great news for everyone involved. Turtles are safe to roam their natural habitat, and humans are free to keep traveling by train to a popular aquatic tourist destination.

Innovative design has come to the rescue once again it seems.
