This Czech Church May Be the Creepiest Place on Earth. It's Decor Will Make You Cringe
It's creepy that the decorations of the "Bone Church" are comprised of human remains, but strangely beautiful at the same time.
According to Wikipedia: "An ossuary is a chest, box, building, well, or site made to serve as the final resting place of human skeletal remains."
The Sedlec Abbot was sent to Jerusalem by the king of Bohemia. The Abbot brought back a handful of holy soil to the monastery, which he spread over the graveyard, effectively making it holy land. This caused demand for burial space to raise exponentially.
Y'know, overcrowding. This made Sedlec into an ossuary.
The bones were bleached to reach a uniform white color. Personally, I find this coat of arms to be very cool. This would be a great theme for a death metal band.
In total, it's estimated that the bones are of 40,000-70,000 people. That's a lot of bones. The chandelier itself includes one of each bone in the human body.
