Help Keep Homeless People Warm This Winter by Supporting This Amazing Jacket Design

by N/A, 10 years ago | 3 min read

Bas Timmer is a Dutch fashion designer that was inspired to create something that could impact people's lives in a real way, not just aesthetically, when a tragic death occurred within his inner circle of friends: one of which lost their father who'd been living on the streets to hypothermia.

Well, his inspiration has come through in a big way with his product being called the Sheltersuit.

Fashion homeless Design Charity Innovative Design Non-Premium

The idea is to provide homeless people with all the essential items they would need to weather life on the streets. For instance, Sheltersuits are wind and water-proof.

It also includes a removable sleeping bag that zips off at the bottom that can be stored in a waterproof backpack that is provided as well. This makes the entire set-up of finding a place to sleep at night easier, cleaner and warmer, all the while staying mobile in these efforts.

Here, you can see a few Sheltersuits being worn in the streets. As you can see, the sleeping bag is attached at the bottom and makes staying warm at night a little bit more attainable.

For now, the suits are being given away for free through the Sheltersuit Foundation, with the aptly titled URL of Let's Hibernate.

The goal is to get these to those in need, as you can see here explained in this Facebook update, homeless people in France are dying at an unsettling rate.

Hopefully, the inclusion of Sheltersuits can help battle this ongoing problem, at least in the areas the foundation can reach at this time. Homelessness isn't a crisis only facing parts of Europe, and we'd like to think that these Sheltersuits could be a global solution to what these people are facing.

The foundation's most recent expedition gave 50 suits away to Syrian refugees. Timmer's suits are created in his studio with the help of volunteers who receive assimilation courses, driving lessons and help in finding a place to live for their work.

Their current goal is now to hand out 2,500 suits across the Netherlands in a further effort to help. The company has made no announcement about expanding globally, but IOHO their efforts could be the thing the world needs to see.

Trimmer was able to turn tragedy in his life into a solution that made be worthy of global expansion. The Sheltersuit gives homeless people essentials that they may not otherwise be able to come by.

If you'd like to donate to Trimmer and his volunteer's efforts in this matter you can do so over on PayPal. Every suit handed out could be a life they save from the harsh elements.
