This Twin-Turbine Jetpack Just Had Its First Test Flight. Sign Us Up, We Want One ASAP

JetPack Aviation CEO and test pilot David Mayman piloted their "JB-9" JetPack over the Hudson River around the Statue of Liberty in a test flight of what JetPack Aviation calls “the first true jetpack":

Hydro-powered "jetpacks" are capable of the same thing, but they're not true jetpacks. And they certainly don't have the capabilities the JB-9 does.

Capable of flying up to and beyond 10,000 feet (not that anyone would need, let alone want to go that high) at speeds of more than 100 mph for 10 minute durations. Of course, if you weren't cruising at 10,000 feet up at 100 mph, you'd be able to fly it for a lot longer.

And not only is it extremely capable and dynamic. It's also remarkably light, making it something one could easily carry around on their own.

"We believe a JetPack should be just that – a jet turbine powered backpack that is capable of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), is extremely light and small and can easily be carried around by the pilot. It should be powerful enough to lift the pilot quickly to thousands of feet above the ground but small enough to fit into the trunk of a car," they say on their website.

The JB-9 is currently still being refined and JetPack Aviation is still doing their due diligence with R&D, but they plan to bring it to market within the next few years or sooner.
