When you have cancer or any other terminal or severe sickness, the last thing you want to hear is some trite, insincere encouragement that's given as though your pet just died.
Artist and cancer survivor Emily McDowell knows this as well as anybody, and she's doing something fantastic in response to it.
With her line of "Empathy Cards," McDowell humorously pokes fun at overused sayings of encouragement often given to cancer patients.
Her cards are a satirically refreshing change of pace from the usual tired, worn out condolences.
"…I also wanted to do more cards that were applicable to chronic/long-term illness, which is how these came about. I remember my oncologist saying the “marathon/sprint” thing to me, and although it’s an apt metaphor, having to run in general freaking sucks," McDowell says on her website.
And for those battling any kind of sickness, hearing bluntly honest, humorously empathetic words is a lot better than the alternative.
