Looking to spice up your fruit salad? Try the pineberry, which looks like a strawberry but tastes like a pineapple.
Who would have thought!?
This alien fruit may look pretty new-age, but they've actually been around since 1750.
According to NPR, pineberries were originally a cross between Chilean and American Wild strawberries. They were about to go extinct when Dutch strawberry breeder, Hans de Jongh, started experimenting the with fruit.
Now, variations of the pineberry are popular all over the world.
And while most people just eat them,
Or put them in desserts,
Some have found more creative uses...like this Thai facial cream.
Either way, they're fairly rare since they're only available mid-May through June.
