10 Most Ridiculous Reasons Athletes Ever Had To Sit Out A Game

And this is where the term "adding insult to injury" came from.
1. During his rookie season in 1991 with the Sacramento Kings, NBA player Lionel Simmons had to sit out several games due to tendonitis caused by playing his Gameboy too much.
2. During the 1997 season, Washington Redskins quarterback Gus Frerotte had to leave the game after spraining his neck while headbutting a wall in celebration of a touch down.
Totally something normal people do when they're really excited about something.
3. In 2002, Lionel Letizi, goalkeeper of Paris Saint-Germain, threw out his back reaching for a Scrabble tile that had fallen on the ground.
No reports were made on whether it was an "x" or a "q."
4. On a flight to an away series in 1992, Atlanta Braves pitcher Tom Glavine, after becoming plane sick, broke his rib on a chair in a hurried attempt to make it to the bathroom.
Giving whole new meaning to the term "star hurler."
5. During the 2014 season, Detroit Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch tore his ACL celebrating a sack of quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Aside from being out for the season, the worst part may have been that his celebration was an attempt to mock Rodgers' "discount double-check" move in his commercial appearances for State Farm. Talk about instant karma.
6. And apparently Chicago Bear's defensive end, Lamarr Houston, didn't learn from Tulloch. He did the very same thing in a loss to the Patriots the following week.
Houston also tore his ACL and was out for the remainder of the season.
7. Jacksonville Jaguars punter Chris Hanson made a costly mistake in 2003 when he accidentally chopped himself in the leg with an axe.
Although in his defense, it was done during a "team exercise" that Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio suggested they do to "man up," in lieu of the team's four-game losing streak.
8. During the 2001 season, NFL placekicker Bill Gramatica tore his ACL excessively celebrating a field goal.
The field goal was a 43-yarder (which if you don't know anything about football, isn't that impressive) and was made during a 0-0 tie...in the first quarter.
9. In 1990, Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Glenallen Hill, who has arachnophobia, cut his foot on a glass table after sleepwalking during a spider-related nightmare.
From that point on, opposing fans referred to him as "Spiderman" - and not in a complementary way.
10. After scoring the game-winning touchdown in the 2007 Super Bowl, Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress' life took a took for the worst when his gun went off in a New York club, firing into his leg.
To make matters far worse, Burress didn't own a state gun license, and due to New York's extremely strict gun laws, was sentenced to two years in prison.
