Science and art have merged in an astounding way. The American Society for Microbiology held their very first Agar Art contest, encouraging microbiologists to create works of art inside petri dishes.

Microbiologist Melanie Sullivan used 5 petri dishes and a combination of proteins, yeast and bacteria to create this replica. 

Neurons, Mehmet Berkmen and Maria Penil

Berman and Penil used Nesterenkonia, Deinococcus and Sphingomonas bacteria to create this piece and took home first place. 

NYC Biome Map, Multiple Contributors

Many microbiologist took home the second place win for this creation, which mimics that grid system of New York City.
