From unwanted and abandoned to loved and adored, this little guy has a lot to be thankful for.
While on a hiking excursion in the Arizona Canyons, former U.S. Marine Sergeant Zachary Anderegg heard fainting whimpering coming from a nearby crevice.
After investigating further, he discovered its source - a small, black dog, helplessly stuck more than 100 feet below.
Immediately, Anderegg gathered up food and water and repelled down the deep crevice.
After realizing he couldn't physically carry the dog up safely on his own, he returned the next day with a crate and pulley, and rescued him from the canyon.
Judging by his extreme malnourishment and ground down claws, likely due to escape attempts, Anderegg assumed the dog had been purposely abandoned.
It's a good thing the former marine found him when he did, because the poor dog only had a few days left to live.
With consistent care and nourishment, the Andereggs slowly but surely brought their new friend, who they named Riley, back to health.
Years later, Riley couldn't be happier to be a part of a loving family that wouldn't dare leave him behind.
Check out the video the Andereggs put together that tells Riley's heartwarming story:
