Alcohol Makes Your Face Look Strange And There's A Reason Why

by N/A, 10 years ago | 1 min read

There's nothing worse than waking up after a night of heavy drinking. Your head is pounding, your body feels like it was hit by a truck, and your face... well, it's a nightmare. Your skin looks red and puffy, and all around you look like a mess. What exactly is going on?

Looking in the mirror the morning after four tequila shots is not a pretty sight. It's like the person staring back at you is a puffy, bloodshot zombie. Here's why this is happening.

1. Your skin is craving water.

You wake up with horrible cotton mouth and there's one thing on your mind: water. Your skin needs it too. Alcohol decreases the amount of anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) your body makes, so just like the rest of your body, your skin gets dehydrated. Make sure you have glasses of water in between drinks.

2. Also, vitamins.

When you drink heavily, you deplete your body of nutrients. Without Vitamin A, your skin loses its glow and it looks dull instead. Make sure that you get Vitamin A back into your body at brunch with dairy, meat or colorful vegetables.

3. Your face looks puffy and swells without water and nutrients.

Yep, a fat face happens after a night of drinking, since without water and nutrients in your system, your skin swells up. Alcohol is also extremely high in sugar, and having a drink heavy in sugar leads to water retention, which causes your face to bloat.

4. Your face is red and blotchy.

Alcohol increases blood flow, which causes dilation in your face's blood vessels...thus resulting in a red face. Careful, because excessive drinking can lead to permanent damage.

5. Last but not least, sleep. You probably didn't get much of it.

Alcohol disturbs a good nights sleep in many ways. It reduces the amount of essential REM (rapid-eye-movement) sleep you get, which makes you tired the next morning. While sleeping in until noon seems nice, it isn't making any difference, since you will most likely only have one or two REM cycles anyway.

YOLO.
