Somehow, the word "sculpture" just falls short.

Artist and tinkerer Derek Hugger has an insatiable passion for mechanisms and solving the puzzles that building them presents.

And his most recent creation, a kinetic, mechanical humming bird, just may be his greatest.

He meticulously blends art with ergonomics to create exquisite, self-moving wooden 'sculptures.' This one, "Colibri," is easily one his most complex.

Comprised of over 400 carefully arranged gears, screws, and aesthetic elements, Colibri brilliantly mimics the motion of a hummingbird in flight.

However, despite being a perfect mechanical representation of flight, the piece actually has much more in common with a clock than a bird.

Hugger shares details about Colibri's design and construction on his site, "Every element of motion has been completely mechanized, from the beating wings to the flaring tail. Intricate systems of linkages and cams bring the sculpture to life with a continuous flow of meticulously timed articulations. As each mechanism has been linked to the next, Colibri cycles through its complete range of motions by the simple turn of a crank."

400 metal and wooden parts, carefully composed to the likeness of a bird, working flawlessly as one. Colibri truly is a feat of both art and engineering.

And it's officially for purchase on Hugger's website...for only $99 mind you!

What the incredible creation in motion:
