If You've Dislocated Your Hip, Here's How Captain Morgan Can Help... Besides The Obvious
Having a dislocated hip is basically the most uncomfortable thing to deal with, for two reasons: 1) there is no medical equipment that can help 2) the doctor is just going to shove that thing back in their with the force of their strength and maneuvering. OUCH.Â
This little number is called the Allis Maneuver, which is when the doctor climbs on top of the patient in a straddled position and literally just shoves the femur back into the socket. Please say there is an alternative…There is, now.
As the mascot threw his leg up on a barrel of liquor, and smiled devilishly, Hendey had a breakthrough…
He realized the doctor could stand next to the gurney, rather than provocatively on top, and use his rested knee (the one atop the liquor barrel) the guide the patient's femur back into place. That sounds a lot better than a violent shoving to us.
Hendey put it into practice right away, and after taking notes on 13 patients, he wrote his findings in the Annals of Emergency Medicine. His sample size was clearly very small, and larger hospitals later confirmed his conclusion.
