The Zoolander sequel is coming to theaters next year, only a short 15 years after the original film. If you're unaware of the Ben Stiller co-created male model assassination plot driven comedy, you've missed out big time, but here's what you need to know before watching (or re-watching the original) and then the much awaited sequel.
1. The Mugatu "Derelicte" collection was unfortunately based on the reality of fashion at the time.
2. The "Derelicte" scene was shot in an abandoned power plant in Long Island, but was originally scheduled to be in a subway tunnel. Both seem fitting for the fashion.
3. Derek Zoolander was first met by the public as a character at the 96 Fashion Awards for VH1. Watch the skit here:
He was essentially supposed to be a "Luke Perry-type" created by Ben Stiller and writer Drake Sather.
4. The film was banned in Malaysia, obviously due to the plot to kill the Malaysian Prime Minister. Stiller and Wilson later met the Prime Minister in 2012, and all was well.
5. The title role of Hansel was written specifically with Owen Wilson in mind. Stiller later revealed he didn't think the movie could've been made if Wilson was unavailable.
6. Wilson was extremely nervous about the "walk-off" scene:
7. Mugatu the character was inspired by an albino monster from "Star Trek."
8. The opening scene was shot during the commercial breaks of the 2000 VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards.
9. There was no guarantee Bowie would be in the film, although Stiller wrote the "walk-off" scene with him in mind. Thank goodness he liked the script and agreed.
10. The orgy scene gave the movie an R-rating initially, but after numerous pleas and convincing to various boards, Stiller proved it was "more silly than sexy," but getting rid of the goat in the scene probably helped.
11. Ferrell originally wanted there to be a "M" cut out of the butt of his pants, but the costume designer said they never got around to that.
12. Justin Theroux did all of his own breakdancing…
Theroux is a co-writer of Zoolander 2, but in the original film he was the breakdancing DJ Evil. He was asked to do so after breakdancing at Ben Stiller's wedding.
13. "Zoolander" came out just a few weeks after 9/11, so Stiller decided to digitally alter a scene which featured the Twin Towers, to fit the sensibility of the day.
14. Owen Wilson did NOT do his own yo-yo stunts…It was a stunt double.
Steve Brown, named National Yo-Yo Master in 2001, was the stunt double.
15. "Blue Steel" was, and still is, actually part of Ben Stiller's morning routine:
His wife pointed it out to him. He squints while he brushes his hair.
16. Ferrell had to dye his hair platinum blonde three different times, all during a season of "Saturday Night Live" in which he wore a wig to cover up the new color.
